As a part of the Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity at the University of Southern Maine Library’s Special Collections, the African American Collection is a body of literature, media, and more recounting the history of African Americans in Maine. The advisory committee is a community organization with the job of preserving, recording, and cataloging this collection. They have worked and continue to work to make this knowledge available to scholars,  students, teachers, and the general public. Located on the 6th floor of the Glickman library you can find the collection and stunning history that has motivated the advisory committee to continue their search for information and to make sure this knowledge will reach many, whether that is through educational programs or exhibitions.
